circumstance events calendar

As we go about our work, we often notice certain lines of interest or themes we’re particularly passionate about that we want to explore further and/or share with others. These often turn into events like those below. Pricing for each event is listed with each description and can be paid in-person. This list is a living document—we update and make changes as things emerge, so check back often!

Please reserve your spot in advance by e-mailing info@circumstancemaine.

Sat 7/18 @ 4:30 + 6:30 : An evening with East/West Wines - We love learning about and sharing wines from less common locales, which makes us so lucky to host Shannon West of East/West Wines, based in Cambridge, MA for a special presentation of compelling natural wines from Southeast Europe, specifically Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary. These are wines made from grapes you’ve never heard of, specific to these places, that all have their own deep, fascinating histories. They are part of an ancient winemaking tradition that has ridden the waves of many iterations of governments, empires, and religions over the centuries and, fortunately for us, we are now seeing a slow but steady flowering of new, post-Soviet natural wineries in the region, not only making natural wine, but doing so with historic, native varietals that offer us an opportunity to enjoy, expand, and be excited.

We’re offering two formats: 1). A Happy Hour tasting flight and talk with Shannon at 4:30; $15 for the flight, $12 for glass pours, plus snacks — OR— 2). A 5 course pairing dinner starting at 6:30 for $100/pp, which includes both food and wine (wow!).

Please indicate which offering you’d like to attend when you make your reservation.

Sat 7/25 from 12 to 3 : Fruit Day Cafe - Does wine taste better or worse depending on how the planets, moon, and stars align when you drink it? Is it possible to grow wine in a way that expresses the place where it comes from, using only natural inputs from that same place? Can we find a more profound experience of food and drink by aligning ourselves with the interconnected energies of all living things? Biodynamics and biodynamic winemakers say “Yes!” to all of the above. So let’s experiment! In our experience as gardeners and natural wine drinkers, biodynamics is something you feel more than you understand. So each month on a biodynamic “fruit day” (when a wine is considered most expressive), we host an afternoon wine bar featuring 100% biodynamic wines. It’s less about “proving” something and more about taking a small amount of time to open ourselves up to the possibility of finding another form of connection with the influences of the natural world, through food and drink.

Sat 8/8 from 12 to 8 : Cider + Smoke, a Maine Cider BBQ - Details forthcoming

Sat 8/22 from 12 to 3 : Fruit Day Cafe - Same as above, with a fresh list of wines and snacks appropriate to the moment.
